"Surface damage."

I hadn't realised the scale of mechanised farming until someone told me to look at the American Midwest on Google Earth.

The circular irrigation systems.

The geometric logic of crop planting.

So vast it's almost impossible to comprehend.

I created these pieces as a kind of" anti-art"

(Similar to the "Earth only" Chapter)

Simply mimicking the scraping of a surface with a tool.
Shape formed by technical control.

I began with the toothed plastic devices used for spreading grout onto walls.

Then realised I needed to operate exactly as a circular irrigation system.

so I made my own. I still use grout.

You can add colourant and it sets hard onto the canvas.
